A Place to Call Home

Mera, along with Kilic and the others, sailed for days with minimal stops and the constant fear of being followed. She breathed a deep sigh of relief when they finally made it to their new home. After they landed on the island, Mera and Kilic used their dragons to lower the ship into the secret pathway into Castle Camp. Once they placed the ship safely in the center of the woods, Mera helped Kilic get everyone out of the cargo hold. Once the people and kids were out, many of their eyes landed on Mera, who was back to being barefoot, and her wine red Bolmsdalian uniform was no longer hidden by Kilic’s dark green cape.

“She’s an imposter!” shouted one of Yannick’s friends, pulling the children around behind him, and taking an iron rod in his hand, ready to attack Mera. The only thing that seemed to keep him from doing so, was Kaida, who stood behind Mera. Her yellow eyes were narrowed, and she let out a low, rumbling growl from the back of her throat. Her three tails were waving above her back. Mera put her hand on Kaida’s nose to settle her before turning to the frightened Chuvandorians.

“We don’t mean you any harm,” she said softly, holding her hands out in front of her to show that she wasn’t carrying a weapon. “We just want a fresh start too.”

“That’s nothing but a lie, a cover-up!” shouted one of the mothers.

“Everyone calm down!” Kilic shouted forcefully over the riotous adults among the group. “Mera is a friend. I know it sounds crazy. I still can’t wrap my head around all of this, but if it wasn’t for Mera, we would still be back on Chuvandor. This is going to be a peaceful, safe place for us to live, but for that to work, we need to get along and be accepting of everyone who comes to seek refuge here. We’re going to bring children and families from other islands here, so I suggest you figure out how to deal with it now.”

“Kilic is right. I know that most of you weren’t alive during The Age of Peace, but there’s a prophecy about people from other islands banning together to end the war. Wouldn’t you all like to be a part of it if you could? Wouldn’t you like to be able to say that you helped end The Age of Fire?” The people quieted, and Mera held her breath as they whispered amongst each other.

Finally, the man holding the rod lowered it and nodded slightly. Seeing his approval, the others relaxed, but they did not take their eyes off Mera and her dragon. Nonetheless, Mera let out a sigh of relief before giving Yannick and Kilic a grateful smile.

After the ship was unloaded, Mera led them to the spot she had chosen for them to build their huts. It was a large clearing in the center of the forest with a few large trees that spread across the opening in the canopy of trees.
